Print this page and keep it by the whelping box. It covers everything you need in Breeders Aid on the night. You can fix or add details later, so on the night just focus on mum and the puppies.

Steps

Have ready

  1. Your phone or iPad, charged, with the charger nearby. Check you can sign in.
  2. Mum's litter created: tap Litters, then New litter, choose mum, link her pregnancy and tap Create litter, then Whelping mode.
  3. Scales that read in grams, and collars if you use them.
  4. Your vet's phone number, written down here: ______________________

Record each puppy (five taps)

  1. Tap Puppy born!
  2. Tap Boy or Girl.
  3. Check the time. It's set to now. Tap Born … only if you need to change it.
  4. Type the Birth weight in grams (or leave it for later).
  5. Tap Save puppy.

Optional: tick Placenta delivered, or tap Collar, colour and markings (optional).

Also in Whelping mode

  • Labour started: tap once when labour begins.
  • Set expected: how many you're expecting, for example from the X-ray.
  • Placentas: tap to record a placenta that arrives on its own.
  • Log (under Mum's temperature): record a temperature reading.
  • Flag next to a puppy: marks it as needing extra attention for the team.
  • Add a note: anything else worth recording.

When to call your vet

Breeders Aid can't tell you whether something is wrong. If it's been more than two hours since the last puppy, Whelping mode shows the time in red with a reminder. If mum is straining, distressed, or you're worried at any point, call your vet. Trust your instincts.

Fixing mistakes

  • Started a puppy by mistake? Tap Discard.
  • Wrong sex, time or weight? Tap the puppy, then the pencil (Edit). Change it and tap Save changes.
  • Entered a puppy twice? Tap the puppy, tap •••, then Remove puppy…, choose Entered twice and tap Remove.
  • Phone locked or app closed mid-entry? Open Whelping mode again. The puppy you were adding comes back.
  • Puppy born just before midnight? Choose the time as normal. Breeders Aid knows it was yesterday.

Troubleshooting

  • It says "Boy or girl?". Tap Boy or Girl, then Save puppy again.
  • It says "Not saved". Your entries are kept. Tap Save puppy again when you have signal.
  • Two litters tonight? Check the litter name at the top of Whelping mode before each birth.
